The majority of our students do not have a Spanish background or heritage. In the classroom, older students translate for the new students when needed. The teachers never use English to communicate with children. We believe that if teachers use the English language with the children, they will make no effort to communicate in Spanish. Montessori Español adapts to the needs of the children by providing them with opportunity to be part of a globalized world by learning a second language. When children discover that they are able to understand a second language, it will stimulate them to learn new words. This positive feedback loop stimulates the child to keep developing their language skills to the point of become fully immersed and fluent in the language.
No. It is not a requirement for the children of our afternoon program to have any experience with the Spanish language.
The effectiveness of the Montessori system lies in learning environments that have been designed to ensure the success of all students. The Montessori system helps children develop skills such as self-confidence, self-discipline, concentration, and fundamental tools that allow them to adapt to the traditional school system. Apart from acquiring the ability to communicate in a second language, Montessori Español graduates are very successful when they attend a regular elementary school.
A freedom atmosphere means that the child may pick the material(s) that they would like to work on. This promotes an active participation and self-direction with intelligence.
